Honda's Dark Side: Say Hello to the Civic Type R Prototype

Since the Honda Civic debuted in 1972, it’s become one of the most beloved car models ever created. It’s etched its name into history thanks to a strong reputation for quality, comfort, and dependability. Now, Honda wants to show another side of the Civic – one that’s much more radical and thrilling.

Not long ago, and fresh off the heels of the launch of the 2017 Civic Hatchback, the next-generation Civic Type R prototype made its global debut at the 2016 Paris Auto Show. The new Civic Type R prototype combines a sporty and sleek hatchback design with track-ready performance.

The Civic Type R prototype boasts a design that was built to thrill. It features the same low and wide proportions of the Civic Hatchback, but with enhanced styling modifications to aid aerodynamic performance.

The Type R isn’t your typical prototype, though. Its exterior is adorned in a highly reflective, finely grained, brushed aluminum-effect finish, which is unique to the model that debuted in Paris.

There’s an aggressive front fascia that’s accentuated by a winged carbon fiber splitter and sporty red accent line, and the additional slatted ducts add width to the fascia, while the diamond-mesh inserts add even more drama to the sculpted air intakes.

Of course, it wouldn’t be a proper Type R without that signature red “H” badge, which sits prominently on the front grille.

The Type R prototype sits on 20-inch piano black alloy wheels. There’s a new intake on the hood; smoked lenses for the LED headlights; indicators; and side indicator repeater lights, as well as other performance-focused styling elements (like carbon-fiber side skirts) – all of which reflect the car’s aggressive character.

Of course, how the final design turns out is unknown at this time, but Honda says it will officially unveil the Civic Type R, along with the Civic Si, in 2017.
