Road Trip Necessities

When someone yells “road trip,” your adrenaline starts to pump and you’re ready to hop in your car and hit the open road, right?

Not so fast! First stock up on some necessities that will make your travels more enjoyable and memorable. Some items you’ll need are purely practical and others will enhance the overall experience of the trip.

Here’s a starter list for road trip necessities:

Maps and/or GPS — Unless you’re traveling with someone who has memorized the entire U.S. highway system, make an investment in some good maps and a GPS so you don’t waste time driving around aimlessly. Having to depend on strangers on the side of the road is not a good strategy to find out how to get to your next destination.

Car Maintenance Items — Make sure you’ve got a spare tire with good tread, a jack and a tire iron. You might want to learn how to use them before your trip, especially if you’ve never fixed a tire on the side of a road. Jumper cables are a must for those times when you leave your lights on or your battery simply runs down so you won’t have to rely on less-than-punctual tow truck drivers to bail you out. Don’t forget a gas can for those times when you miscalculated how many more miles you could travel once the gauge hit empty. A flashlight is another lifesaver, especially if your vehicle breaks down in the middle of the night.

Water and Snacks—A sizable inventory of bottled water is convenient and will save you lots of money. Have you ever purchased a bottle of water at a fast food restaurant? It’s very expensive. Snacks? It’s up to individual taste, of course. Whether you opt for candy bars, Slim Jims and chips or granola, carrot sticks and trail mix, a good amount of snack food will save you money and allow you to drive further without stopping too frequently. If you like a little energy boost, consider taking along a thermos of coffee or tea or an energy boosting drink like Red Bull.

Great Tunes—Music that you can sing along with like the Beatles, Rolling Stones or U-2 is great. Of course it depends individual taste, so if you feel like grooving to rap, jazz, classical or country, go with it.

First Aid Kit—You’ll need something for those little accidents that are bound to occur. If you don’t have a kit, at least take along some band-aids, bandages, peroxide and other items that can help with minor injuries.

Happy motoring!
