Deep Dive—Honda Sensing®
Safety is one of Honda’s highest priorities. Sometimes, machines can be more reactive to dangerous situations than humans. Whether it’s distracted driving or just split seconds between you and disaster, autonomous driving features might be able to react before you even know what has happened. By relying on a series of cameras and sensors located all around the vehicle, impacts can be reduced or mitigated altogether. The Hall Honda Virginia Beach team wants to highlight some of our favorite autonomous driving features from Honda.
Collision Mitigation Braking
It'd be great if we had a magic ball that could predict every accident before it happens. Honda's Collision Mitigation Braking System is as close as you can get. This system uses the front radar transceiver and a forward-facing camera to detect accidents before they happen. It can warn you to apply the brakes before you notice the danger ahead. If you don't slow the vehicle down, the CMBS™ will lightly apply the brakes for you. If an accident is imminent, the system will slow the vehicle down to mitigate or avoid a collision.
Road Departure Mitigation
Distracted driving happens to all of us from time to time. While it's best to keep your eyes on the road, Honda knows that sometimes, life has other plans. To keep your family safe in times like this, the Road Departure Mitigation system can keep you on the right path. By identifying lane markers, the system can detect when you're in your lane—and when you aren't. First, the system will give you a warning. If you don't correct your vehicle's path, the RDM system will apply slight steering inputs to keep you on the road. If steering assistance isn't enough, the system will slow the car to a stop to avoid a possible collision.
Adaptive Cruise Control with Low-Speed Follow
Cruise control is such a simple tool that reduces driving fatigue. By setting your speed and only focusing on staying on the right path. road trips are so much more enjoyable thanks to cruise control. However, it can be pretty frustrating in stop-and-go traffic, since you can't use traditional cruise control in these situations. Honda has solved that issue with Adaptive Cruise Control with Low-Speed Follow. Adaptive Cruise Control can maintain a set distance between you and the vehicle ahead, as well as the speed you select. The distance can be maintained down to a complete stop, making it the most essential feature for heavy traffic situations.
Lane Keeping Assist
Similar to the Road Departure Mitigation System, the Lane Keeping Assist and Lane Departure Warning systems can monitor the lane markers. This system helps you steer more precisely, and it keeps your Honda centered in the lane. If the signal isn't activated when your vehicle starts to leave its lane, the system will alert you and if you don't correct it, the Lane Keeping Assist System will gently steer you back into the lane.
Pedestrian Detection
As a part of the Collision Mitigation Braking System, Pedestrian detection keeps you and pedestrians safe. Especially helpful in busy cities, Pedestrian Detection can help recognize pedestrians and give you warnings with sound as well as an alert. If you need help hitting the brakes, the system can apply them for you, preventing an accident.
Of course, nothing replaces driving with attention and intention. Honda has created these features to help reduce the risk of accidents but you still have to do your part to stay as safe as possible. These features, combined with intelligent impact-resistant design, can help keep you and your family safe on the road and these aren’t the only ones! Each model may have different standard and available features.
