Variable Valve Timing

Honda’s variable valve timing technology, i-VTEC®, is used in many engine options to increase performance as well as fuel economy and efficiency. It works by altering the timing of the valves by shifting the phase angle of the camshaft. If that sounds like a bunch of jargon you don’t really care about, just know that i-VTEC equals better efficiency. This technology is used throughout the Honda lineup on most models.

Turbo Powertrains

Much like how variable valve timing can improve efficiency, so can turbochargers. The application of turbochargers may have started with the desire for faster vehicles, but it has an extra benefit. By using a turbocharger, Honda can use a smaller engine with less horsepower without creating a vehicle that feels sluggish. Small turbos provide the power you need to merge onto highways or pass another car but don’t drink up fuel when you’re driving normally. A great example is the Civic equipped with a 4-cylinder turbocharged engine. With 180 horsepower, you might expect this car to be expensive at the pump but this sporty sedan achieves up to 42 mpg on the highway.*

Honda offers several top models as hybrid options. The popular CR-V, Accord, and Clarity are all available as hybrid models. The popular Honda Insight is also an amazing hybrid option from the automaker – it offers up to 55 mpg in the city.
