What is a turbocharger?

A turbocharger (or turbo) is placed on the exhaust manifold of an engine. It uses the gases created by normal engine function to spin a turbine. That turbine then pulls in outside air and compresses it, giving it a higher density. All engines take in air to run properly, but when this air is compressed, it increases the air mass pushed into the engine. When the compressed air leaves the turbocharger, it usually passes through an intercooler, which cools the air before it enters the engine. 

What are the benefits of a turbocharger?

The benefits of utilizing a turbocharged powertrain depend heavily on what the automaker’s goal is. For performance applications, like sportscars, it can improve performance. Turbochargers can increase an engine’s horsepower and torque without needing a larger engine. Smaller engines weigh less, so the power-to-weight ratio improves. When placed on larger engines, it can produce heart-pounding speed and remarkable power. The size of the turbo can also affect how the turbocharger affects performance. Smaller turbochargers will increase power lower in the rev range, while large turbos can produce dramatic effects at higher RPMs. 

It’s not all about speed, though. Some automakers choose to use turbocharged powertrains for efficiency. We all know that smaller 4-cylinder engines produce fewer emissions and use less fuel than large V8 engines, but they sacrifice power to do so. With the addition of a turbocharger, carmakers can utilize more economical engine options and still offer their clients great performance. It’s the best of both worlds.
